      "The Red Hand 1 – The myth"

      Sculpture created by Raymond Watson - Solid oak, bronze and slate. Size: 49cm x 54cm x 20cm. Description: Sculpted from solid oak, a sacred wood. As the O’Neils swam toward Ulster they agreed that the first to put his hand on the land would own everything. Hugh O’Neil then cut off his hand and threw it ashore. The mythical symbol of the Red Hand is claimed by both communities and is probably the first time that the hand became important in Irish politics.
