BIO: Claire Rollinson
When I moved with my Husband and 1 year one son to N Ireland I felt terribly alone. I had left my friends and family and familiarity behind. However I was met with great generosity and made great friends. I found a little place to paint and draw in Rowallane where my husband was working; something like a potting shed, which I whitewashed, and I started painting myself into the land. In fact I painted quite a lot of cows; I admired their slow, heavy tranquillity and sense of belonging as I saw it , the latter being something I yearned for and envied in the people around me. These paintings were quite successful - 2 were part exchanged for a washing machine repair, another for a dog, another went to the west of USA… Then we moved to the Old School House in Mount Stewart and to a sense of starting all over again only not so bad.. I had a nice room in the house for working in and the winter sun set before us over Strangford Lough, the woods behind us. I could walk freely through the land and as my son grew up he had the run of the place with only the gamekeeper to beware of. My neighbour introduced me to SGI Buddhism and my work became infused with light and colour. I found the courage to push myself to exhibit and to continually develop and explore my art practice. I am delighted to have been asked to exhibit in Gallery 1608. We moved back to England in 2011 and live at the Buddhist centre Taplow Court , Maidenhead where my husband is the head gardener now. I continue to paint and draw, and am currently working on illustrating children’s stories. I am very fortunate that I am able to make regular visits back to N Ireland, a land that has played an important part in my own story. With gratitude, Claire
