BIO: Karen Hunter
In developing my glass sculpture I attempt to reflect on the unique beauty that Nature creates , using definitions of the patterns and symmetry which define many elegant marine invertebrates. The influence of these patterns creates a sense of balance and style which produces a unique reference point for the shape of the piece. My mathematical background strongly influences the work I produce in terms of shape and patterns. I have also found wonderful inspiration from my time spent in Australia, particularly the wonder of the marine wildlife found there. My choice of glass as a medium has revealed the variety of techniques available in glass which has been enlightening. My work involving local landscapes has evolved through a fixation with jig-saw like precision work in colour and textured glass. Throughout my work I have often been led to discover the fine balance between artistic control and serendipity. Nature is my influence and inspiration and through the use of glass I have created forms which allow the fluidity and lustre of glass to influence the outcome of my pieces. The opportunity to control and enhance the colour , shape and vibrancy of a piece of glass by using different fusing techniques is an an educational and inspiring journey.
