BIO:  James Horan

Born in 1980, I grew up in Dublin, leaving for Cork to attended Crawford College of Art and Design when I was 19.   I graduated in 2003 and have been working full-time as a sculptor since. I work in stone, mainly limestone and marble.  As the rescession interrupted my plans for success I decided to go back and study for a masters degree. In 2010 I graduated from University College Cork with an M.A in Aesthetics and the History of Art. My sculptures are expressive, figurative and are recognisable by their over size hands and feet. I describe the style as a physical representation of and emotional response, I want people to have an emotional reaction to the sculptures. It is not enough for me to create pretty sculptures, they need to affect people, to tap in to something intangible while also being a powerful physical presence. I have often had full conversations with people who were unconciously stroking or rubbing a sculpture. Negative space within a sculpture allows it to inhabit, not invade the area it occupies. My work is based on people, society and our environment. Humour plays a large part in my work; both in the ideas and the physique of the figures . I often portray figures with underwear or super-hero capes, to make light of more serious ideas. Specific ideas in my work range from a mother holding her child to drunks fighting in the street, anything I see has the potential to inspire me to make a sculpture.Sometimes an underlying theme can consume my practice for months at a time and a series of work can be produced, these are often serious themes, like the recession, religion or my most recent series about war and mans obsession with power.
